My inspiration for FoodMatch sprouted in a truly ancient olive grove on a small
island in the Ionian Sea. The splendor of those two thousand year old trees was
at once breathtaking and indescribable. Craggy, massive and magnificently gnarled,
the trees looked every bit their age, yet they were carefully pruned and bountiful
beyond belief. Clearly, the trees were deeply rooted not just in the dry rocky soil
but also in the history and fabric of life on that little island. These were trees
that mattered. In that moment, I realized what the Greeks have known for centuries
-- that olives are cultural and gastronomical gems. Like wine, they reflect their
origin; their character comes from the climate, soil and traditions of the places
where they are grown.
Upon returning home, I founded FoodMatch on faith that American consumers would
embrace the authentic taste and pure flavors of brine-cured regional olive varietals.
We discovered a broad clientele, who shared our passion for artisanal olives, ready
to explore the world through food.
